Electronics and Computer Gadgets for Bicycle Touring and Outdoor Camping

lightweight camp light weight trekking backpacking travel

Electronics and bicycle tours together are not an intuitive blend.  The bicycle is a simple mode of transportation that transcends the need for circuit boards and plug adapters.  While it's certainly possible to survive in a natural state without consuming electricity, bicycle touring doesn't mean you have to live with no gadgets at all.  Myself, I am after much more than survival.  For me, traveling by bicycle is not a way to get away from it all, but instead a place where I live.

You wouldn't be reading this page if I didn't travel with some technology. I wrote the first draft of this page while waiting out a rainstorm, in a leaky tent, camping high in the Ecuadorian Andes.  I worked on the computer completely on batteries.  Added bonus, the laptop also lights up the tent better than anything else.

Finding suitable electronic devises that can handle a long bicycle tour is a worthwhile search.  Things like computers and camcorders take some hard knocks on a bike tour.  Rough dirt roads pound and shake, humid conditions corrode delicate electronics, dry conditions bring invasive dust, hot weather cooks plastic, cold temperatures cause things to not work and sudden rainstorms cause a sudden scurry for cover.  And there's always to possibility of a catastrophic crash or robbery. Your portable electronics see a lot more action on a bike so the equipment you invest in better be ready to take a beating.

Below are the major pieces of my electronic or electrical equipment and information on my experiences with each.  Please remember that I am in no way suggesting that I am an authority in this area.  This is only meant to give the reader ideas about my preferences and your personal preferences will probably be different than mine.  Please see some advice about advice for more discussion in this area..
