Costa Rica - Panama
N
ot Without My Bike
Day, Month 15, 2003
(Sent From Panama City, Panama Canal)

-failed ride to the ranch

Jaco - all night disco

We got up before the sun and started another rolling sunrise.  The road winded south along the ocean exposing numerous descrete beaches and villiages.  Then we turned inland on a dusty road.  We had trouble finding the correct road and actually rode in a complete circle.  This wasted the remander of the mornings cooler hours.  The steep dirt sections caused to overheat and have to stop.  We found the right road and onle put in a few miserable kilometers before my rear tire went flat.  That was the last straw.  I worked at changing the tube but the heat was making everything impossible.  This was a very low point for the both of us.

In the mist of hitting bottom a couple guys in a pick up truck stopped and asked if we needed help.  This was a case of meeting the right person at the right time.  He gave us water and openingly told us that we looked bad.  We loaded our bikes and gear in the bed of his truck and were zooming up the mountain.

RANCHO MASTATAL

Rancho Mastatal is a very hidden place.  Looming in the background is the Parque Natxcx and the peak of xsx mountain.  Even though we had gained some altitude we were still very much in the rain forrest.  The ranch was a very interesting place.  It was a bit of a quit eco-tourist retreat.  While we were there the place was busy with an American group who came on a two week workshop.  They were learning about local building techniques.

- meeting Sheri

- hired a guid.

ranch - hike with guide - eco tour that killed snakes - builders

back to Jaco

- crab in hair

back to man ant

bus to Santa Elena

decision not to ride to panama city

goal not to have a goal

conclusion - to some we will never be anything but a gringo.

The big story of leaving panama with our bikes.
