Peru has not been an easy country to ride through.
It has been full of extremes. These extremes include riding at sea
level to climbing to our highest altitude at 4,680 meters or 15,350 feet.
That is the highest either of us have ever been with or without a bike.
Peru has also had some of the worst and best people that we have met.
It has been common for
ignorant men to say very rude (funual) things to Cindie as we ride by.
This always brings a reaction from me. We have also met some very
extraordinary Peruvians who have shown us that kindness and generosity
flourishes in this country of extremes. We rode in a desert that
was so dry that absolutely nothing could grow and then a week later it
snowed on us while we rode in the high Andes. We have been on several very
quiet roads and camped in deserted places under the stars.
We also have seen and felt political tensions that have made us want to
leave. Recently, we saw a violent political protest complete with the
police beating people with clubs. Free speech does not seem to exist
here.
All these stories and more are waiting below. I hope
that you enjoy them and write back with comments. I will always make a
special effort to respond to the people who have taken the time to subscribe
to our email list.
People have written in and asked us to add a guest
book or discussion board to our web site. This is a good idea. A discussion board would serve as
a meeting place
for like minded people, interested in the various topics covered on our web site. You can
read some of the questions that I receive in email, add your own knowledge,
or just
leave your thoughts like a guest book. Please help me get it started by leaving a brief
(or long) comment or question at:
This is the last newsletter before our much anticipated mail
stop. We are both getting very excited about actually getting real mail
from many of you. We will be in Cusco in a couple of weeks and stay there
for a week or two. So, there is still time to send us a post card from
where you live. We look forward to hearing from you. They will hold our mail until we get there.
